BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Virginia Tech women's tennis team knocked off Marshall, 6-1, Tuesday, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The #69-ranked Hokies improve to 10-8 on the season, while the #72-ranked Thundering Herd falls to 12-9.

The Hokies began the match by taking the doubles point. Virginia Tech's Jessica Brouwer and Abbey Walker won the first doubles match, 8-3, against Lynzee Kever (Edmond, Okla.) and Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia). Ashley James and Jessica Long of Virginia Tech clinched the #3 doubles match over Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Jeannie Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.), taking the clinching point 8-3. Inga Beermann and J.J. Larson gave the Hokies the doubles sweep with an 9-8 game against Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) at the number one doubles position.

Virginia Tech then won five out of six singles matches, with the Herd's only win coming at the number five spot, where Keener knocked off Abbey Walker, 6-0, 6-1.

Marshall returns home to play Louisville this Saturday at 11 a.m. The match is scheduled to take place at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on the campus of Marshall University.
