RICHMOND, Va. - Marshall's Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor picked up ranked wins against No. 15 Virginia Commonwealth as the Rams held on for the 4-3 victory.

"We played really good match and we really came to compete," Marshall head coach John Mercer said.

The Thundering Herd (11-6) fell behind early by losing the doubles point to the Rams (15-3). Thaddea Lock and Karolina Soor picked up the Herd's only win for Marshall in double 9-8 over VCU's Vera Petrashvitch and Olena Leonchuk.

Marshall was able to comeback with strong performances in singles. The Herd's Schmitt and Soor produced two ranked singles victories. Schmitt defeated No. 68 Maria Yuferova, 6-4, 2-1 after she retired and Soor knocked off 118th-ranked Olga Borisova, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.

The third Herd victory came from Lock who won in the No. 5 position over Petrashevitch, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

"We are playing well and trying to get everyone healthy and back up to speed," Mercer said. "There is a lot to look forward with our team."

"It was a really exciting match that came down to last couple of matches. It's good to see our players are really improving quickly"

Marshall will be back in action Sunday at 11 a.m. against the Richmond Spiders.
