College Station, Texas - The Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M University has announced its 2006-07 Diversity in Athletics Awards and Marshall University has been recognized for its graduation rates among African American student-athletes.
Marshall is one of only three Division I institutions to be honored for its graduation rates among both male and female African American student-athletes. The other schools to appear in both categories are Northwestern University and the University of Louisiana, Monroe.
"This is just one component of our overall graduation success among our student-athletes here at Marshall," Director of Athletics Bob Marcum said. "Our coaches, the Buck Harless Student Athlete program, our faculty and staff, and our student-athletes should all be commended."
According to the Graduation Success Rate, which includes student-athletes who transfer in or out of institution in good academic standing, 76% of Marshall student-athletes in all sports over the last survey period (1996-99) graduated.
The Diversity in Athletics Award recognizes NCAA Division I athletic departments that excel in the area of diversity. Departments are recognized in eight different categories that range from diversity strategy to overall excellence in diversity. Each category is scored based on criteria established by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport. Graduation rate date was collected from the NCAA using the four-year average for each school and factored into the organization's criteria for the graduate rate categories.
