Women's Tennis Defeats UTEP, 4-0, Advances To Semifinals

TULSA, Okla. - The 3-seed and 63rd ranked Marshall women's tennis team advanced to the C-USA Semifinals with a 4-0 win over #6 UTEP on Friday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. The Thundering Herd will face the #10-seed Rice Owls, who upset #2-ranked SMU, 4-3, on Friday afternoon.
The Herd started the match by claiming the doubles point after winning at the number one and three positions. Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lynzee Kever (Edmond, Okla.) knocked off UTEP's Weronika Blocyznska and Megan Pritchard, 8-5, at number one, and Marshall's number three team of Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) defeated Amber Brightly and Samantha Attard, 8-1.
In singles play, Marshall claimed the match at the number three, four, and five singles spots. Number three player Kashelkina defeated UTEP's Marina DeLuca, 6-2, 6-4, Kever beat the Miners' Katherine Palider, 6-2, 6-2, and Marshall's Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) knocked off UTEP's Megan Pritchard, 6-3, 6-2. The Herd was leading in all other singles matches before play was halted after Marshall clinched the victory.
Marshall takes on Rice, who defeated the Herd in last year's tournament, at 2 p.m. CST in the C-USA semifinals.
