HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Senior forward Kolby LaCrone (Zanesville, Ohio) scored his fourth goal of the season in double overtime, and sophomore JD Hill (Dublin, Ohio) registered two assists, to defeat visiting Western Kentucky, 2-1, in the Marshall Classic finale, Sunday afternoon at Sam Hood Field.
The victory improved Marshall to 4-3-0 this season, while the Hilltoppers dropped to 1-5-2.
The Herd scored the game-winning goal in the 118th minute to capture its first overtime victory of the season. Hill's shot deflected right to LaCrone standing in the 18-yard box that he shot to the left post to seal the win in the sudden victory.
In the opening half, the Hilltoppers struck first at the 25th minute mark from an unassisted goal by Dustin Downey. Downey headed a ball that was punched out by Marshall goalkeeper Craig Ratanamorn (Wichita Kan.) off a throw-in. Downey's header was just out reach for Hill, who was standing on the goal line trying to head the ball out.
During the second half, Western Kentucky would cling onto its narrow 1-0 advantage for most of the period. However, the Herd managed to double their shot total in the second half to create more scoring chances.
At the 88th minute, Marshall caught a break when Nick Daniele (Columbus, Ohio) was tripped a yard out of the 18-yard box. Hill subbed in for the injured Daniele and would take the direct kick. Hill sent in a line drive into the box that was batted around before sophomore transfer Michael Bolt (Hendersonville, Tenn.) got a foot on the ball and evened the game at one.
In the second half, Marshall outshot the Hilltoppers, 14-5 and finished the match with 25 total shots.
The Herd had other chances tie the game in the second half. Senior Jeff Lenix (Westerville, Ohio) received a pass that he headed toward LaCrone in the goal box, but was blocked by a Hilltopper defender.
During the ensuing corner kick, senior Avneet Shergill's (Vancouver, Wash.) cross was deflected to LaCrone, who again was blocked by an opposing defender.
Junior Osric Flores (Everett, Wash.) received a pass from the head of Dana Heimbecker (Niagara Falls, Ontario) that he struck, but missed high as the ball hit the crossbar.
LaCrone, Flores and Shergill provided the majority of the Herd's offense. LaCrone finished with three shots all of which on goal with Flores and Shergill adding five and six shots respectively.
Junior transfer Ratanamorn made his second career start in goal and tallied five saves to increase his season total to 11.
Defensively, the Herd relied on Lenix, who contained the steady offensive pressure from Western Kentucky. The preseason All-Conference USA nominee contained the Hilltoppers to nine shots in regulation, 17 less of their 36 shots per game average.
The Thundering Herd's LaCrone, Matt Dickerson (Warsaw, Ohio) and Lenix received all-tournament nominations for their play in the classic.
Marshall returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. to take on Ohio Valley at Sam Hood Field.
