Women's Tennis Defeats the No. 20 Nationally-Ranked Pair

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team fell to non-conference foe the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday, 6-1. Junior Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was the lone point for the Thundering Herd with a sweep of Megan Broderick, 6-3, 6-0, in singles No. 1.
The Herd's No. 15 nationally- ranked duo of Schmitt and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) defeated the No. 20 nationally-ranked pair of Carolina Escamilla and Christine Johnston, 9-7, in the No. 1 doubles.
"We didn't play very well today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "But I give credit to Kentucky because they are a good team who performed well against us."
In the No. 2 doubles, Sarah Woestmann and Megan Broderick defeated the Herd's Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England), 8-1. Playing in the No. 3 spot, Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Yulia Kashelkina (Mascow, Russia) lost to Whitney Spencer and Alaina Trgovich, 8-4.
In the singles two position, No. 69 Sarah Woestmann defeated Soor, 7-6, 6-0. The Wildcats' Christine Johnston took the No. 3 spot victory over freshman Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria), 6-0, 6-3.
Schwartz fell short to Alaina Trgovich, 6-4, 6-4, in the number four spot. Carolina Escamilla and Whitney Spencer finished the Wildcats' points at the fifth and sixth positions over Lock and Keener.
"We have to learn from today," coach Mercer added. "We have to be ready to play another big match tomorrow."
Marshall will kick-off its home opener Sunday, Jan. 20 beginning with West Virginia at 10:00 a.m. The Herd will then play host to Morehead State at 2:00 p.m. at the Huntington Tennis Club.
