PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Marshall University women's tennis team completed day three of the Women's Wilson/ITA East Regional Championships, Sunday, at the University of Pennsylvania Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia, Pa. with all day singles and doubles main draw competition.
"We are competing hard with a few up and downs," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "We are facing some tough competition this weekend."
The Thundering Herd's Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) (42nd) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) both automatically advanced to the singles second round, Sunday because the seniors stand seeded in the main draw.
The 42nd-ranked and number one seed Schmitt defeated Virginia Tech's Jessica Brouwer, 6-2, 6-2, Sunday, in the second round. Schmitt then took a straight-set victory over the University of Richmond's Kelly Tidwell, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the fourth round.
Schmitt will face Princeton University's Lauren McHale Monday in the fourth round of the singles main draw.
The 17th-seed Soor fell to Boston College's Lauren Cash, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, in the singles main draw second round.
Senior Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took a straight-set victory over Lafayette College's Ansley Scudder, 6-0, 6-1, Saturday, to advance her to the singles main draw second round.
Keener fell 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to Yale University's Jessica Rhee in the singles main draw second round, Sunday.
Sophomore Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) also advanced to the singles main draw second round Sunday after taking a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Drexel University's Zineb Hilali, Saturday.
Princeton's Hilary Bartlett took a 6-2, 6-2 advantage over Raich, Sunday, in the singles main draw second round.
The No. 14 and number one seed senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor advanced to the main draw third round after defeating Long Island's H'Ann Johnson and Lilana Cortes, 8-0, and George Washington's pair, 8-1, Saturday.
Schmitt and Soor took an 8-3 advantage over Boston College's duo of Lana Krasnopolsky and Laura Cash in the doubles main draw third round, Sunday. The Herd pair will meet the eight seed duo of Jennifer Stevens and Emily Fraser from Virginia, Monday, in the doubles main draw quarterfinals.
"We are hitting balls well," Coach Mercer added. "It is still early so we need to play more matches to improve our consistency."
After qualifying for the singles main draw Friday, junior Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) fell to Virginia's Maggie Yahner, 6-1, 6-2, in the singles main draw first round, Saturday.
Yale's Vicky Brook defeated junior transfer Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, in the singles main draw first round, Saturday.
Monday competition starts at 9 a.m. with the doubles quarterfinal round. Singles round of 16 will begin at 10 a.m., with the singles quarterfinals and semifinals of doubles to follow.
Doubles finals draw and singles semifinal draw will start at 9 a.m., Tuesday, with the singles final draw to follow.
As the number four East Regional team, the Herd was allowed for the first time the maximum number of entries into the championships, which is six single players and three double teams.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the Nov. 6-9, 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
