PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Marshall University women's tennis team finished competition at the Women's Wilson/ITA East Regional Championships, Monday, at the University of Pennsylvania Levy Pavilion in Philadelphia, Pa. with singles and doubles main draw competition.
The number 16 seed from Princeton University, Lauren McHale upset the Thundering Herd's No. 42 and number one seed Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.), 0-6, 6-1, 6-2, in the fourth round of the singles main draw.
"It was a disappointing day," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "I give credit to our opponents because they are very good players."
The No. 14 and number one seed senior tandem of Schmitt and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) fell to the number eight seed from the University of Virginia. Jennifer Stevens and Emily Fraser took an 8-5 advantage over the Herd pair in the doubles main draw round of 16.
"We just weren't able to work through the rough spots today," Coach Mercer added.
As the number four East Regional team, the Herd was allowed for the first time the maximum number of entries into the championships, which were six single players and three double teams.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the Nov. 6-9, 2008 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
Several Marshall players will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in the Hokie Fall Invitational, hosted by Virginia Tech at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center. All day competition will begin Friday, Oct. 31 and conclude Sunday, Nov. 2.
