HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team will be competing at the 15th annual Hokie Invitational, hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. beginning Friday and concluding Sunday at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center. Friday matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. with competition lasting all day.
Thirteen teams will be competing this weekend including Albany, Appalachian State, Davidson, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Liberty, Marshall, Murray State, Radford, Chattanooga, Virginia, Wofford, and Virginia Tech.
"This will be a very good tournament," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "This weekend will be an opportunity for the three to get a lot of matches and build their confidence."
The Thundering Herd's sophomores Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) and Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) along with freshman Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) will represent Marshall this weekend.
Raich has a 6-2 singles and 2-3 doubles record entering weekend competition. She competed last weekend in the Women's Wilson/ITA East Regional Championships and advanced to the singles main draw second round.
Kellner is 3-3 in singles and 2-5 in doubles so far this fall. She competed with partner Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) in the doubles qualifying first round at the Women's Wilson/ITA East Regional Championships last weekend.
Koprcina has a 3-3 singles and 2-3 doubles record so far in 2008. She won all of her single and doubles matches in her last appearance at the Spartan Invitational last month.
"We expect great things from them this weekend," Coach Mercer added.
As the number four East Regional team, the Herd was allowed the maximum number of entries into the East Region Championships last weekend for the first time. It consisted of six singles players and three doubles teams.
