Women's Basketball Set For Home Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Following its season-opening win at Appalachian State, the Marshall women's basketball team will open up its 16-game home schedule, playing host to North Texas on Monday at 7 p.m.
In the opener at Appalachian State, the Thundering Herd fought back from a late eight-point deficit to top the Mountaineers by a score of 67-65. Alix Barnette scored five late points in the win.
Sophomore Tynikki Crook led the way for Marshall with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half. She also tied Casey Baker with a team high six rebounds in the contest. Barnette and Alyssa Hammond were the other double-digit scorers for MU with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Monday's contest marks the season opener for the Mean Green. In their lone exhibition game, they topped Texas Woman's University by an 85-77 margin. The Mean Green is led by senior forward Amber Jackson, who averaged 13 points and six boards per game last season.
The Mean Green have two other returning starters who averaged double figures last season; junior guard Brittney James and Senior Jo Hall. They averaged 11.8 and 10.5 PPG, respectively.
The two teams met for the first time last season in Denton, Texas with Marshall coming away with an 82-70 win. Kizzy Hart scored 23 to lead the Herd in that game while Baker notched the first double-double of her career with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Amber Jackson of North Texas scored 18 in the game.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Cam Henderson. All women's basketball games will be carried on WMUL 88.1 FM, Marshall's student radio station. The broadcasts will also be carried live on the web at http://www.marshall.edu/wmul/.
The Herd will be back in action on Friday and Saturday in the annual Fifth Third Classic. This year's tournament features Tennessee State, who the Herd will face on Friday at 7 p.m., along with UL Monroe and Morgan State.
