HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The University of Richmond opened up a 30-point halftime lead and did not look back, downing the Thundering Herd women's basketball team, 74-49 Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Spiders (9-1) shot .731 in the first half while holding the Herd (6-4) to just 16 first-half points.
Tynikki Crook was once again the top scorer for the Herd, finishing with 13 points. Chantelle Handy and Alyssa Hammond scored 11 apiece. Handy led all players with seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
Richmond shot .731 in the opening half en route to a 46-16 halftime lead. Danielle Bell got the Spiders on the board with a three on their first possession. With Richmond up 5-0, Casey Baker hit a lay-up to put Marshall on the board.
The Spiders scored the next six before Tynikki Crook made it an 11-4 game. Richmond continued its hot shooting, going on a 13-4 run to go up 24-8. Following another bucket by Crook, the Spiders kept the pressure on, finishing the half on a 22-6 run, taking a 46-16 lead to the dressing room.
It was the second time in three games the Herd failed to score 20 points in the opening half. In last Saturday's game against Ohio U., the Herd scored just 19 points in the opening stanza.
The second half began in a similar to fashion as the first half. The Herd looked poised for a comeback, notching the first four points of the half, but a 7-0 Spider run ended that momentum.
Richmond's lead hovered around 30 for the remainder of the contest until the final few minutes when the Herd cut the lead to 25 as the game would finish 74-49.
Richmond out-shot the Herd, .549-.378 while finishing with a rebounding advantage of 32-26.
Johanna McKnight led Richmond with 14 points while Samantha Bilney tallied 11 and Rachael Bilney had 10.
The Herd will have the next nine days off before taking the court again at the Terrapin Classic, which will be hosted by the University of Maryland. Marshall will face Mississippi State on the 29th at 12 p.m. before taking on either Maryland or UNC Asheville on Dec. 30.
