SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall forward Kandice Green and guard Nicole Emery scored 18 points as the Pirates grabbed a 73-52 win over the Thundering Herd women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium.

With under 12 minutes remaining and the score tied at 45, the Pirates (5-1) finished the game on a 28-7 run to take the win. The SHU defense held Marshall (5-2) to just two points over the final seven minutes of the game.

The complexion of the game changed at the charity stripe as Seton Hall shot 28 free throws in the second half to just ten by Marshall. Alyssa Hammond led the Herd with 11 points while Chantelle Handy notched ten.

Rebounding was the story early on as Seton Hall took control at the start. The Pirates grabbed eight offensive rebounds over the first eight minutes on its way to a 23-13 lead. With the game tied at 7-7, Ebonie Williams hit a shot that sent the Pirates on the run, which saw Kandice Green score six points. After Nicole Emery hit two free throws to give SHU the ten point lead, Marshall made its first run of the game. The Herd scored the next four points before a bucket extended the SHU lead back to eight, 25-17. From that point, the Herd would go on a 16-5 run to end the half.

Rashedah Henriques knocked down a three and just 20 seconds later, hit a free throw to make it a 25-21 game. Alyssa Hammond scored on the next trip down the floor to bring Marshall within two, 25-23. Following a Pirate free throw with 4:47 left in the half, Hammond cut the lead to one after hitting a jumper.

The run did not stop there as Angelica Harris scored her first points of the game, give Marshall its first lead of the contest, 27-26. The lead was extended to three points on a deep Chantelle Handy jumper with 3:27 remaining until halftime, forcing Seton Hall to use its second timeout of the half. Buckets were traded over the final three minutes as the Herd would take a 33-30 lead to the dressing room.

Marshall's defense was difference in its run to end the half. After allowing the Pirates to come up with eight offensive boards in the first eight minutes, Marshall allowed the Pirates just one over the final 12. Rebounding was not the only difference maker for the defense, as it forced the Pirates into 16 first-half turnovers. The second half began the same way as the first. The Pirates opened up on a 10-2 run over the first three minutes as four players scored. A three by Casey Baker ended the run and brought the Herd back to within two, 40-38.

With the score tied at 45-45 with 11:48 remaining, the Pirates went on a 9-1 run, helped by a 7-of-8 stretch from the free throw line. Following a shot by Handy to bring the Herd back within six, 56-50, Seton Hall put the game out of reach, scoring the next 13 to go up 69-50. Following two free throws by Alix Barnette, the Pirates added four more points to complete the 73-52 victory.

Marshall shot .317 from the field for the game, but .185 shooting in the latter half proved to be the difference as the Pirates shot .474 to close the game. The Pirates were also 30-of-37 from the free throw line. Another difference came on the glass as SHU outrebounded the Herd, 42-33.

Handy led Marshall with nine boards while Henriques set a career mark with five.

Noteisha Womack of SHU recorded a game high 12 rebounds and finished with 12 points.

The Herd will return home next Saturday as it will host Ohio U. at 3 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.
