Match One against Pittsburgh

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University's tennis team began its six-game home stand with a 7-0 victory over the University of Pittsburgh (1-2) on Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Club. The 55th-ranked Thundering Herd (7-2) advanced to a 10-0 all-time series lead over the Panthers.

"We improved our play and had hard hitting against both teams today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said.

No. 19 Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) continued her perfect singles streak (9-0) at the number one position with a straight-set victory over Kristy Borza, 6-3, 6-2.

Senior Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) defeated Sabrina Visrom, 6-1, 6-1, at the number two. Playing the number three, Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) took a straight-set decision against Elizabeth Adams, 6-3, 6-3. At the number four, Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) defeated Christie D'Achille, 6-2, 6-4. Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) took the No. 5 spot win over Carlie Smith, 6-3, 6-1. To close the singles straight-set sweep, Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) defeated Anna Broverman, 6-1, 6-1.

The Herd also captured all of the doubles matches beginning with Schmitt and Schwartz at the number one spot over Adams and Borza, 8-4. Playing the number two, Keener and Kashelkina defeated D'Achille and Visram, 8-6. Raich and Lock took the number three position with an 8-1 decision over Smith and Broverman.

Match Two against Cincinnati

The Herd continued on point after dominating Pittsburgh with a 7-0 decision over the University of Cincinnati on Saturday evening at the Huntington Tennis Club. Marshall improved to 8-2 overall while the Bearcats fell to 2-6 for the season.

"We are happy to come-off two wins," Coach Mercer added.

Playing doubles number one, Schmitt and Schwartz defeated Jennifer Keiner and Jenny Rowen, 8-4. Kashelkina and Keener took an 8-1 decision over Elizabeth Young and Valeriya Dandik at the No. 2 while Raich and Lock took the number three spot over Alizee Pardis and Ashley Hale, 8-1.

The 19th-ranked Schmitt remained perfect for the season at the number one with a straight-set decision over Paradis, 6-2, 6-1.

At the number two, Schwartz defeated Keiner, 6-2, 7-5. Playing the three mark, Raich took a 7-5, 6-0, victory. Keener swept Rowen, 6-0, 6-0, at the four spot. Lock took a 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 decision over Dandik. Playing the six, Kashelkina won 6-0, 6-1 against Hale.

The Herd advanced to an 11-1 all-time series lead over the Bearcats.

Marshall will play host to Miami, Ohio on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Huntington Tennis Club with a 1 p.m. start.
