Women's Tennis Opens Day One of UVa Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall University's women's tennis squad opened its fall season at the 2nd annual University of Virginia (UVa) Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., Friday, at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Thundering Herd faced opponents from UVa and Old Dominion in all day competition.
Marshall posted a 2-5 singles record and a 1-3 doubles record on the first day of the event.
The Herd's doubles pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) had the only doubles victory over Claire Bartlett and Jennifer Stevens (UVa), 8-5.
UVa's tandem of Amanda Rales and Emily Fraser defeated Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.), 8-3. Marshall's team of Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) fell 8-1 to Lindsey Hardenbergh and Neela Vaez of UVa.
Virginia Commonwealth's Mihaela Bunea and Olena Leonchuk defeated Marshall's Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) and Tennessee's Sam Orlin, 8-2.
The Herd's two singles victories were from Schmitt and Raich. No. 42 Schmitt took a straight-set victory over Fraser (UVa), 6-4, 6-4. Raich downed Marija Citic (ODU), 6-1, 6-1.
In other singles competition, Lock fell 6-0, 6-1 to Hardenbergh (UVa). UVa's Bartlett defeated Bailey 6-4, 6-2. Keener fell 6-0, 6-3 to UVa's Rales (106th). Vaez took a 6-2, 6-4 advantage over Kellner. Old Dominion's Irina Dementyeva defeated Koprcina 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Seven teams, eight nationally-ranked singles players, and four nationally-ranked doubles pairs will continue competition this weekend. The seven teams include: Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Marshall, North Carolina State, Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion, and UNC-Greensboro.
Action will resume Saturday, with play beginning at 10 a.m. The invitational will conclude Sunday, at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
