CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall University's women's tennis squad continued action at the 2nd annual University of Virginia (UVa) Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday, at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Thundering Herd posted a 1-3 doubles record and a 2-5 singles record in the second day of the event.
"I felt we had another successful day against good competition," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "We are gaining excellent experience this weekend."
The Herd's only doubles victory was from Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.). The tandem defeated Alex Bara and Ana Bara of Virginia Commonwealth, 8-1.
The pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) fell to Old Dominion's Nadine Fahoum and Charleen Haarhoff, 8-4. The duo of Kateryna Yergina and Laura Burns (VCU) defeated Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) and Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England), 8-0.
"We competed well today but there is still room for improvement," Coach Mercer continued.
Schmitt and Raich remained unbeaten this weekend with the Herd's only singles victory in the second day of competition. Schmitt's (42nd) second victory was over 100th-ranked Fahoum (ODU), 6-1, 6-4. Raich took a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Alex Bara from Virginia Commonwealth.
In other singles competition, Ana Bara (VCU) defeated Bailey, 6-4, 6-1. Keener fell to Burns (VCU), 6-2, 6-0. Virginia Commonwealth's Olena Leonchuk took a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Kellner. Lock dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to Mihaela Bunea from Virginia Commonwealth. Joanna Dobrowolska (ODU) defeated Koprcina, 6-1, 6-2.
"We will have a tough day of competition tomorrow against South Carolina," Coach Mercer added. "But we look forward to the challenge."
Seven teams, eight nationally-ranked singles players, and four nationally-ranked doubles pairs will conclude competition this weekend. The seven teams include: Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Marshall, North Carolina State, Virginia Commonwealth, Old Dominion, and UNC-Greensboro.
The invitational will conclude Sunday, with matches beginning at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
