Women's Tennis Concludes Opening Weekend at UVa Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall University's women's tennis squad concluded play at the 2nd annual University of Virginia (UVa) Invitational, Sunday, at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Thundering Herd posted a 2-1 doubles record and a 1-6 singles record in the final day of competition.

Marshall registered a 4-5 overall doubles and a 5-16 overall singles record in its opening weekend of competition against Old Dominion (ODU), Virginia (UVa), Virginia Commonwealth (VCU), South Carolina and UNC-Greensboro.

"We had great doubles victories today," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "This was an excellent first weekend for us."

The Herd's pair of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) took an 8-5 decision over South Carolina's Natasa Vuckovic and Gira Schofield. Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) defeated Suzanna Mansour and Ashley Miller from South Carolina, 8-4.

The tandem of Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) fell to UNC-Greensboro's Valerie Behr and South Carolina's Jelena Rajic, 8-5.

The lone singles victory for the Herd was from Bailey who defeated South Carolina's Miljana Jocic, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

In other singles competition, the 42nd-ranked Schmitt fell to 54th-ranked Ana Zuboria (South Carolina), 6-1, 6-4. Behr (UNC-Greensboro) defeated Kellner, 6-4, 6-4. Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) fell to Vuckovic (South Carolina), 6-3, 6-2. South Carolina's Rajic defeated Lock 6-2, 6-3. Mansour (South Carolina) took a 7-5, 6-2 advantage over Keener. Koprcina dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Miller (South Carolina).

"Hopefully we can build on our accomplishments this weekend into the Michigan State Tournament," Coach Mercer added. "We look forward to next weekend's competition."

Marshall will travel to East Lansing, Mich. next weekend to compete in the three-day Michigan State Tournament.
