Women's Tennis Goes 16-0 In Singles Competition Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Marshall University women's tennis team went undefeated in singles competition, Saturday, at the third annual Spartan Invitational at the Michigan State University campus. The Thundering Herd faced Akron and Michigan State in singles play and Cleveland State in doubles competition.
"We showed much improvement from last weekend," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "I am excited for our team and their commitment this year."
Marshall posted a 16-0 singles record and a 3-1 doubles record in the first day of competition. The 42nd-ranked Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) defeated Akron's Zara Harutyunyan, 7-5, 7-5. The senior then took a straight-set victory over Michigan State's Stephanie Kebler, 6-2, 6-2.
Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) took a 6-2, 3-6 6-3 decision over Akron's Anna Baronayte, The senior then defeated Michigan State's Manon Noe, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took straight-set victories over Akron's Kerry Langworthy, 6-0, 6-2, and then over Michigan State's Elena Ivanova, 6-0, 6-2.
Junior transfer Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) defeated Akron's Tanya Gombera, 6-3, 6-1. She then took a 6-2, 6-2 advantage over Michigan State's Lindsey Lonergan.
Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) defeated Jeremie Benjamin, 6-0, 6-4, from Akron. The junior then took a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Michigan State's Whitney Wilson.
Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) defeated Akon's Carolina Castro in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore then took a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Michigan State's Dana Guentert.
Sophomore transfer Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) dropped a 6-2, 6-1 advantage over Akron's Alyssa Carlson. She then defeated Michigan State's Ana Milosavljevic, 6-1, 6-4.
Freshman Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) defeated two Michigan State opponents, Kate Bonnen, 6-2, 6-2, and Ally Wickman, 6-2, 6-2.
The nation's 14th-ranked senior tandem of Schmitt and Soor defeated Cleveland State's Charlotte Gibbons and Catrine Bjerrehus, 8-6.
The team of Keener and Bailey took an 8-1 decision over Cleveland State's Sandra Bjelan and Denisa Muntean. The pair of Kellner and Lock defeated Cleveland State's Myra Pepino and Molly Drake, 8-0.
Michigan State's tandem of Dana Guentart and Ally Wickman took an 8-5 advantage over Raich and Koprcina.
"Hopefully we have a good day of play tomorrow to finish the invitational," Coach Mercer added.
The invitational will conclude Sunday with an 8 a.m. doubles match against the Bowling Green State University and singles contests with Detroit Mercy and Louisville in all day play.
