Women's Tennis Finishes Strong at the Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Marshall University women's tennis team again went undefeated in singles competition, Sunday, at the third annual Spartan Invitational at the Michigan State University campus. The Thundering Herd faced Louisville and Michigan State in singles play and competed against Detroit Mercy, Bowling Green State, and Michigan State in doubles competition.

"I felt we had another great day of competition," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "The team played very well and again had no losses in singles action."

Marshall posted another perfect singles record, 8-0, and a 6-2 doubles record to conclude the weekend. At the Spartan Invitational, the Herd recorded an impressive 24-0 overall singles mark and a 9-3 overall doubles record.

The 42nd-ranked Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) took a straight-set victory over Louisville's Bianca Gorbea, 6-2, 6-2. Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) defeated Jo-Ann Vanerde from Louisville, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Senior Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Louisville's Amelia Harris.

Junior transfer Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) defeated Louisville's Lindsey Jones, 6-2, 6-0. Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) took a straight-set advantage over Gabrielle Duncan from Louisville, 6-1, 6-1.

Louisville's Natalia Baez fell to sophomore Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria), 6-0, 7-6 (4). Sophomore transfer Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 mark over Oksana Kuyso from Louisville.

Freshman Kristina Koprcina (Split, Croatia) defeated Michigan State's Tara Hayes, 6-4, 6-0.

The tandem of Schmitt and Koprcina defeated Bowling Green's Katia Babina and Sam Kintzel, 8-4, and Detroit Mercy's Kelly Davis and Svetlana Flakova, 8-1.

The pair of Raich and Lock took an 8-2 advantage over the team of Stefanie Menoff and Libby Harrison from Bowling Green and an 8-4 victory over Aneta Maricevic and Erin Weldon from Detroit Mercy.

Soor and Kellner defeated Michigan State's Ashley Stockwell and Kate Bonnen, 8-0. Detroit Mercy's team of Annie Moore and Zeljka Minic defeated Soor and Kellner, 9-7.

Bowling Green's pair of Christine Chiricosta and Kelsey Jakupcin took an 8-5 decision over Keener and Bailey. The tandem of Bailey and Keener defeated Michigan State's Kate Bonnen and Tara Harasim, 8-0.

The Herd posted a 16-0 singles record and a 3-1 doubles record in the first day of competition, Saturday.

"I hope we can continue this improvement throughout the year," Coach Mercer added.

Marshall's Schmitt will be the sole Conference USA representative in the main draw at the Riviera Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's All-American Championship and will be joined by Soor in the main draw doubles, with play beginning, Oct. 2, at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
