BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team had two doubles teams, along with Kara Kucin in singles play, take the court on the qualifying day at the Wilson/ITA Atlantic Regional's, hosted by the Virginia Tech Hokies at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center.
Kucin, the three seed in the qualifying bracket, won her first match against Alice Chen of Maryland-Baltimore County (6-3, 6-3). In the afternoon match, Kucin defeated Katie Blow of Virginia Tech (6-1, 6-2) to advance into tomorrow's main draw.
With Kucin advancing, all eight Herd players will participate in the main draw starting Friday morning. Seven MU players received automatic bids into the main draw. Junior Michaela Kissell, ranked 36th in the nation, is the top seeded player in the tournament.
This is the first time in MU tennis history that every single player on the roster has earned a spot in the main draw at this tournament.
In doubles qualifying action, the third seeded team of Isabell Raich and Catherine Kellner won both matches to advance into tomorrow's main draw. The duo defeated Jakob and Pinyol of Longwood University 8-2 in the morning session, and knocked out Hamling and Lysienia of George Washington in the afternoon, also by a score of 8-2.
The top seeded team in qualifying of Deanna Bailey and Kucin were ousted in the second round by the team of Blanks and Vaez of Virginia, 8-4.
Joining Raich and Kellner in the doubles main draw will be the second-ranked team of Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna, and the seventh-ranked team of Kristina Koprcina and Thaddea Lock.
