Los Angeles, Calif. - Michaela Kissell of the Marshall University women's tennis team advanced to the round of 16 in the 25th Annual Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on the first day of action. She now faces the second-ranked player in the country Friday afternoon.
Kissell, ranked No. 36 in the country, upset No. 9 Josipa Bek of Clemson in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Ahead is a matchup with No. 2 Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia. The match starts at 11 a.m. PST.
"I am really proud of how Michaela handled herself today," head coach John Mercer said. "She had a very professional approach and did an excellent job from the beginning to the end of the match."
For Mercer and the Marshall women's tennis team, this is the furthest an MU player has ever advanced in the main draw of this event.
The contest with Gullickson will be a rematch from the first round of the NCAA tournament one year ago. Gullickson topped Kissell in straight sets.
