IRVING, Texas - Marshall University swimmer Vera Niemeyer and diver Haley Holmquist earn Conference USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week accolades, as announced Tuesday by the league office.
Holmquist won the 3-meter dive in back-to-back weeks, with her latest win coming at Radford when she tallied a score of 256.57. The score is a career-best for Holmquist, topping her previous score by over 20 points (235.95). Holmquist's performance bumps her to the third-best performer at Marshall in the 3-meter. The junior also took a second-place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 238.35.
Niemeyer, a freshman, earned two first-place victories on Saturday with wins in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Niemeyer notched a personal-best in the 1000 free with a time of 10:55.90. Saturday's meet against the Highlanders and Campbell Camels marks the second time the newcomer has won the 100 back this year; she garnered the win with a time of 1:02.72.
The occasion is the first time the swimming and diving program has had an athlete receive the award since Oct. 21, 2008, when now sophomore, Liz Greenway (swimming) and former diver Siobhan Schuurman were awarded the honor.
