HUNTINGTON, W.Va.--Marshall University heads to Troy University for a Dec. 28 matchup in Troy, Ala. Monday night's game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. EST.
Marshall defeated Troy 99-70 Dec. 12 in Huntington. The Thundering Herd now lead the all-time series 2-0. Tonight's game is the first between the two schools in Troy. The Trojans have gone 1-1 since meeting the Herd in Huntington 16 days ag. Troy dropped a 93-85 decision to Houston Dec. 14 before defeating New Orleans 78-76 at home Dec. 17 at home.
Brandon Hazzard continues to lead the Trojans in scoring at 18.2 ppg clip. Richard Delk checks in with a 13.5 points and a 4.7 rebounds per game average. Michael Volger is scoring 12.3 ppg while Yamene Coleman is scoring 10.2 ppg. Coleman, an Alabama transfer is Troy's rebounding leader (7.5).
Shaquille Johnson (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) had 16 points while Tyler Wilkerson (Sr., Lexington, Ky.) added 12 for Marshall (9-2) as the Herd lost 98-61 to No. 10 North Carolina Dec. 22 in Chapel Hill. Marshall used an early 13-2 run to give themselves their snapshot moment: Dago Pena's (So., Punta Gorda, Fla.) bank shot gave the Herd a 21-17 lead with 8 minutes left in the half.
North Carolina led 44-35 at halftime and did not take their first double-figure lead when Marcus Ginyard hit a layup with about 16 1/2 minutes to play to make it 50-39. Ed Davis ended that burst with a free throw that pushed it to 62-39, and Marshall didn't get closer than 18 the rest of the way. The Herd had their seven-game winning streak snapped, and were denied their first victory against a ranked team since beating then-No. 9 West Virginia in 2006. (Courtesy of AP):
