HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's tennis team swept Penn State University, 7-0, Sunday morning at the Huntington Tennis Club. The 46th-ranked Thundering Herd improved to 5-2 overall, while the Nittany Lions fell to 2-3 so far this season.
"We played with a lot of focus and had a solid tactical match today," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "Overall, we played a very good match."
Marshall started its lead early with two doubles victories at the No. 1 and 3 positions. The No. 44 senior dynamic duo of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesburg, Sweden) defeated Maria Prishlyak and Monika Mical, 8-3, at the No. 1.
Playing the No. 3, the pair of Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) took an 8-1 advantage over Sarah Lotto and Dorothy Dohanics to secure the doubles point.
Penn State's lone victory for the day was an 8-5 decision from Lauren McCarthy and Denisa Zobeideh over Deanna Bailey (McDonough, Ga.) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria), at the No. 2 slot.
"Penn State came out solid in singles after losing the doubles point," Coach Mercer continued. "We found our rhythm and played very well during singles play."
The Herd kept its winning streak going with victories at all six singles positions. Soor defeated Zobeideh in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 mark. Schmitt (33rd) then took a 6-1, 6-2 over Mical, at the No. 1.
Raich defeated Prishlyak, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 position, while Keener took straight-set victories over Dohanics, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 5. Bailey defeated McCarthy, 6-2, 3-6, 11-9, at the No. 4 slot. Catherine Kellner (Smithtown, N.Y.) finished the sweep with a 6-1, 6-3, over Leyla Morzan at the No. 6 mark.
Marshall enhanced its all-time series lead over Penn State to 5-3. The Herd has defeated the Nittany Lions four times in the past five years.
"We are looking forward to a good weekend coming up," Coach Mercer added. "We look forward to the opportunities to come this season."
The Herd will begin a seven match road trip next weekend at Minneapolis, Minn. Marshall will first face 64th-ranked University of Minnesota (2-2), Friday, at 7 p.m. (EST).
