HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Vera Niemeyer, who will begin her collegiate swimming career at Marshall next fall, recently participated in the German nationals.
Niemeyer's top effort came in the 200 back, where she took first place for her first national age group title. She also had other successful events, taking second in the 100 back and third in the 50 back, all in her 17-18 age group.
Her time for the 200, 2:17.78, was fifth best in the nation while her times for the 100 and 50 back events placed her in the top 20 nationally.
"To have Vera make the German national finals in the 200 back at her age and to finish 5th is a tremendous accomplishment! Germany year in and year out is one of the top swimming countries so it shows she is the real deal," Marshall Head Coach Leonard Kraus said.
"The great thing is that she walked away with a best time in all six events she swam, that is an accomplishment that is rarely done so at the biggest meet of her career so far she did everything a coach could ask an athlete to do! "
She also swam the 100 and 50 freestyles in which she placed 8th and 9th, respectively, in her age group and led off the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays. In the 4 x 200, she posted a career-best time of 2:08.88, four seconds better than her previous best.
"I am extremely excited and proud of what she has done this summer," Kraus continued. "I know that it will continue to build here at Marshall next fall."
