HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University swimming and diving team opened the 2010 portion of its schedule going 1-and-1 in the friendly confines of the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
Marshall outlasted California (Pa.) 192-98, but was edged by Akron 197-100 to move the Herd to 5-5 overall on the season.
"There is always an unknown coming back to the first meet after being off in training for so long," said head coach Leonard Kraus. "There were some rough spots on some of our races, but there were also some bright spots. Liz [Greenway] and Jenny [Johnsson] had really great meets and Jamie [Holmquist] had her best meet of the year so far."
Liz Greenway finished third in the 100 freestyle (54.87), 200 freestyle (1:58.19) and 500 freestyle (5:18.55). Jenny Johnsson posted second-place finishes in three events: 1000 freestyle (10:42.06), 500 freestyle (5:13.94) and 200 IM (2:13.46).
Jamie Holmquist notched a fourth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:12.78), which places her at ninth all- time in school history. Holmquist also recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.22) and 200 IM (2:16.06).
Freshman Vera Niemeyer swam a personal-best in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.25. The finish moves Niemeyer to sixth overall at Marshall in the event.
"For the divers to dive the way they did today was nice even though the placements might not show it," said Kraus. "They have been working hard and looking at it overall it was good."
Rachel Hannum was the top MU finisher in the 1-meter dive with a third place finish (222.15). In the 3-meter, Haley Holmquist was the top Herd finisher with a second-place score of 244.65.
Marshall swimming and diving will hit the road as it heads to Athens, Ohio, on Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. to face Ohio.
