Herd Women Take Down Defending C-USA Champs, 74-60

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Rashedah Henriques recorded a career-high 15 points as the Marshall University women's basketball team downed the defending Conference USA champion UCF Knights, 74-60, Friday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall (9-5, 1-1 C-USA) opened the game on fire, shooting 68% in the opening period. The Herd hit 10 of its first 12 shots on its way to an early 20-8 advantage. Chantelle Handy and Tynikki Crook were solid early on, scoring six each in the first seven minutes.
UCF (3-7, 0-1 C-USA) responded with a quick 5-0 run to close to within seven points, however, an 8-0 spurt, led by a pair of Henriques three-pointers put MU up 28-13. The lead would grow to as many as 19 in the half before MU would take a 36-20 edge into the half.
Handy led all scorers with ten in the opening stanza while the MU defense held the Knights to 8-of-31 shooting to open the game.
Early in the second, Marshall extended the lead to 20, thanks to a 3-for-3 start from the floor. It would reach as many as 25 when Handy hit a shot with 15:59 remaining in the game. UCF cut into the lead, reducing it to as few as nine, but the Herd was too much, hanging on for the 14-point victory.
Handy led the Herd with 17 points while Crook scored 13 before fouling out.
Marshall finished with a .566-.333 shooting advantage and also won the battle of the boards, 42-37.
Marshay White was the leading scorer for UCF, scoring 17.
The Herd will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, playing host to Southern Miss at 5:00 p.m. It will be televised on ESPN2 and will also be carried live on ESPN360.com. Sunday's game will also mark the ninth annual Jam the Cam game.
