HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Senior Elizabeth Herman posted a team-high nine kills but the Marshall University volleyball team was unable to answer against the Golden Hurricane as Tulsa swept the Herd in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) on Friday night.
"I think we did some really good things out there," said head coach Mitch Jacobs. "We have to look at who is doing positive things for us; who is playing with fire, with passion. Watching Sascha [Byous-McConnell] out there playing, she was energized, playing hard and getting across the net."
Senior Elizabeth Fleming posted her seventh double-double of the season giving MU 25 assists and 12 digs but the Thundering Herd moves to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA action with the loss. Tulsa remains unbeaten in C-USA play with an 8-0 slate and is 18-2 overall on the season.
Set one saw the Herd mount a 5-0 run to give MU an early 9-5 lead, but with help from Tulsa's Tyler Henderson the Golden Hurricane returned with an 8-1 run (12-10). Three points later Tulsa put up an 8-0 streak (21-13) giving TU an eventual 25-17 tally in the first frame. Henderson chalked up 10 kills for a .562 attacking percentage in the stanza.
"You have to give credit to Cameron Yoho for her play against Tyler," said Jacobs. "Tyler's swing is phenomenal and Cameron did an excellent job reaching across and to get those blocks."
Unfortunately for MU, the Tulsa momentum carried into the second frame as the Golden Hurricane went on a 13-4 run forcing the Herd into a timeout behind 17-8. Marshall battled to close the gap but fell in the second set 25-17.
With back-to-back frames in hand Tulsa claimed a 3-0 sweep with a 25-18 score in the third and deciding set of the night. Henderson was tops on the TU squad with 18 kills for a .361 attacking percentage.
