HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's basketball team is set to take on USC Upstate, in its season-home-opener on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd jump-started its 2010-11 campaign at the Lancer Classic on Nov. 12-13. MU dropped its season-opener, 64-55, against the defending Women's Basketball Invitational Champions, Appalachian State. Senior Tynikki Crook netted her 1,000th career point in the victory, becoming one of just 17 MU players in program history to achieve the milestone. The Herd had three players score in double-figures, Rashedah Henriques (12), Veronica Ruiz (13) and Crook (14), but it wasn't enough to overcome the Mountaineers 65.2 shooting percentage in the second half.
Marshall rebounded with a 62-54 win against host Longwood on Saturday night. Alaya Mitchell drained a career-high 10 points in the contest, while Crook grabbed the game's only double-double, with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
USC Upstate enters its first-ever contest against the Herd after dropping its season-opener, 87-53, to Mississippi State on Friday night. The Spartans are led by Preseason All-Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Chelsea McMillan. McMillan snagged a game-high 20 boards while netting a team-high 17 points in the loss. Madison Webb added double-figures for the Spartans, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field while last season's A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Tee'Ara Copney, chipped in 11 points against the Lady Bulldogs.
Several promotions are scheduled to take place in Wednesday's home-opener. Scheduled prizes include; free McDonalds for a year, a 50 dollar gift card to QDOBA, free Papa John's Pizza, a free oil change courtesy of Tic Toc Tire, a free premium carwash at University Car Wash and a free pita from Pita Pit. A limited number of WMUL/Marshall Women's Basketball long sleeve t-shirts will also be given out to lucky fans. Fans are encouraged to keep their ticket stubs following every game as every time the women score 75 points, stubs can be redeemed at University Car Wash for 25% off of a car wash the day after the game.
