HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Four Marshall players reached double-figures in Wednesday night's women's basketball game at the Cam Henderson Center, but Tee'Ara Copney's game-high 28 points led USC Upstate to its first win of the season, 79-73 against the Thundering Herd.
MU falls to 1-2 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 1-1.
"I thought that we came out with good energy and we fought back-and-fourth all night long. We were down in numbers and we very much missed Rashedah Henriques and Milan Germany," head coach Royce Chadwick said.
Copney cashed in her first of four three pointers on the night, at the 17:36 mark of the opening half to cap off a 7-3 Spartans run. The Thundering Herd would respond with a three point play by Adrian Randall and a Tynikki Crook layup to grab its first lead of the contest at 8-7. The teams would battle on to seven more lead changes and 14 ties before all was said and done.
The Spartans mounted an 8-0 run with under four minutes to play in the half, but once again the Herd climbed back with a Veronica Ruiz put back off an Orlandria Williams three-point attempt to bring MU within six. Lateidra Elliot followed, burying a three as time expired in the opening half, bringing the score to 37-34 at the break.
Copney ignited an 11-2 run early in the second half to take an eight point advantage. However, Elliott helped the Herd battle back with four points and two assists during MU's 8-0 spurt, grabbing a 56-54 lead with 10:25 to go.
The Spartans would build its advantage back up to eight with 8:07 to play, but the Herd was unable to complete the comeback.
Elliott grabbed the games only double-double with a collegiate career-high 17 points and 10 assists, while Tynikki Crook netted a team-high 19 points. Adrian Randall and Tessa Johnson each chipped in career-highs with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
USC Upstate also had four players hit double-digits. Sharniece Wadelington poured in a career-high 19 points, while Kendra Wallace netted 14 points and Madisen Webb added 11.
The Thundering Herd takes the rest of the week off to prepare for Ohio University on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., at the Cam Henderson Center. Marshall will look to close the gap on the Bobcats, who currently own a 22-17 all-time series record over the Herd.
