HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's basketball team looks to climb back to .500 on Tuesday night as it hosts Ohio University (1-1) at 7 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd (1-2) will attempt to overcome early season injuries that have sidelined one third of its roster, Rashedah Henriques (day-to-day), Veronica Ruiz (day-to-day), Milan Germany (4-6 weeks), Erica Woods (out for the season) and Brittney Turner (out for the season).
In its latest contest Marshall played a lineup that featured three freshman, three sophomores, two juniors and one senior to battle USC Upstate.
"We were down in numbers and missed Rashedah Henriques and Milan Germany. We lost our starting three and our sixth man," head coach Royce Chadwick said. "We were moving freshmen and putting them on the fast track. They played well in spurts."
The Thundering Herd fell just short dropping its home-opener, 79-73, to the Spartans on Wednesday night. However, MU saw encouraging production from its youthful bunch. Junior college transfer Lateidra Elliott grabbed the game's only double-double, pouring in 17 points, producing 10 assists and adding seven rebounds. Adrian Randall, Tessa Johnson and Orlandria Williams each tallied career-highs netting 14, 10 and six points, respectively. Ruiz also set a new career-high with 11 rebounds on the night.
"This has been my most challenging season yet," Chadwick said. "It has been a definite character check for both the players and coaches. However, in the long run it will pay us tremendous dividends for our younger players to have the amount of on the job training that they are experiencing this early in the year."
MU hopes to snap a two-game losing streak against the Bobcats, dating back to the 2008-09 season. The Bobcats enter Tuesday's matchup after defeating Memphis on Saturday night 62-54. Tenishia Benson leads the charge for Ohio, averaging 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Benson went 7-for-8 from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the arc to help defeat the Tigers.
The Thundering Herd concludes the Thanksgiving week with a matchup at Kent State on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
Marshall continues its food drive to help benefit the Huntington Area Food Bank. Any fan contributing two cans will receive free admission into Tuesday's game.
