OXFORD, Ohio - Marshall's Lateidra Elliott grabbed a career-high scoring 14 of her team-high 19 points in the opening stanza but Miami (Ohio) shot 57.1% from three-point land to grab an 89-63 victory in Monday night's non-conference women's basketball game at Millett Hall. Courtney Osborn led all scorers with a season-high 26 points for the RedHawks.
MU drops to 2-5 on the season while Miami improves to 4-3 and takes a 17-7 series lead over the Herd.
"We had to stop transition and we had to stop the three and that's all they got in the first half," head coach Royce Chadwick said. "We weren't focused on the things that we had to do to stop them and we let them play to their strengths. We had spans in the second half where we stopped transition but we never stopped the three."
The Thundering Herd grabbed an early 7-4 lead in the opening half but the RedHawks would use a 14-6 run to take an 18-13 advantage mid-way through the period.
Marshall would come back within one, but Miami would explode for 4-of-5 from behind the arc over the ensuing 4:59, leading to a 17-2 run that was capped off by a Hannah Robertson three-point-play with 5:48 remaining in the half. The RedHawks would take a 43-28 lead into the break.
The RedHawks expanded its lead shooting 58.6% from the field in the second half. Rachael Hencke netted 16 of her 18 points in the closing stanza.
Tynikki Crook added 18 points and five rebounds for the Herd, while Ruiz chipped in 10 points.
Kirsten Olowinski and Robertson added 16 and 10 points respectively, for Miami.
The Thundering Herd returns home for a two-game home stand, beginning with North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Dec. 11. MU takes the remainder of the week off to finish finals and jumps back into action against Cleveland State on Dec. 18. Both tipoff's are scheduled for 7 p.m., at the Cam Henderson Center.
