Final Stats

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A solo homer by UCF was the deciding factor as the Marshall University softball team fell 1-0 to Central Florida on Sunday. With the loss, the Thundering Herd moves to 18-22 overall and 3-12 in Conference USA.

UCF (25-17, 10-4 C-USA) tallied what would be the only run of the game as Ashleigh Cole went mining in left field with a homer, giving the Black and Gold a 1-0 advantage in the second.

"It was a well played game by both teams," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "The difference was that their defense stepped up; especially when we had solid contact. Their infield made good plays as well to keep us off the bases."

The Herd would see it's only hits of the game come off the bats of Marcena Bertoldo and Rebecca Gamby.

Ashleigh Cole (16-10) recorded the shutout after 7.0 innings of work and three strikeouts. Katie Murphree took the loss for Marshall after throwing a complete game and striking out five Knights along the way. Murphree moves to 11-12 on the year with the loss.

"I liked what I saw in our team defense behind Katie on the mound," Stanton said. "As soon as we find a way to put all three aspects of the game together, we'll see our team perform to its potential."

Marshall softball will continue its home stand at Dot Hicks Field when it hosts non-conference doubleheaders on Tuesday against Ohio (1/3 p.m.), Wednesday against Wright State (2/4 p.m.) and Sunday against Dayton (1/3 p.m.).
