HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd Department of Athletics and women's basketball team has announced the final tally of donations raised at this year's Pink Zone event.

The event, held when the women's team hosted SMU on February 21, raised a total of $3,931.56. Saint Mary's Hospital and Cabell Huntington Hospital will each receive $1840.78 while the West Virginia Breast Cancer and Cervical Screening Program will receive $250.

All of the donations will fund breast exams for local women who cannot afford them.

"Once again, the great women's basketball fans of Marshall have stepped up and supported a great cause," Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. "Tremendous benefit will come from the generosity of the Thundering Herd family."

Pink Zone is a nationwide event, which raised a total of $1,045,000 while reaching more than 922,000 fans across the country.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone®, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006.
