LEXINGTON, Va. - Three different players found the back of the net as the Marshall University men's soccer team defeated VMI 3-1 Sunday afternoon to conclude the Sculley Invitational hosted by VMI.
The Thundering Herd took a lead early as Sammy Boateng provided a cross from the right flank which found Carl Munday who tucked away his second goal of the season. The Herd would have a 1-0 lead at halftime.
MU would strike again 13 minutes into the second half when Boateng was taken down in the box and Mat Butler connected on the penalty kick attempt for a 2-0 advantage.
Freshman defender Travis Brent would then hit a laser from 30 yards out for the Herd's third goal of the game and the first goal of his career in the 60th minute. Brent, along with Tom Jackson and Natty Thomas were selected to the all-tournament team.
VMI (0-3-1) would get a goal back in the 62 minute but that would be as close as they would come as the Thundering Herd finished the Sculley Invitational with a win and a tie, and improved its overall record to 3-0-2.
"We came out flat but still managed to control the game," head coach Bob Gray said. "VMI is a typical military school that works very hard, but it is a good sign that we can not play our best but still win the game."
The Herd is back at Sam Hood Field this Wednesday when MU hosts undefeated Wright State (4-0-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
