HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University head women's basketball coach Royce Chadwick has announced the 2010-11 schedule, which will feature nine postseason teams from a year ago along with ten teams who won 20 or more games during the 2009-10 campaign.
"We are very excited about this seasons schedule," coach Chadwick said. "We open the season on the road in the Longwood Tournament with WBI National Champion Appalachian State, who is coming off of their finest season in 14 years. We come home to open the season with South Carolina Upstate, who brings their 21-win team from a year ago to Huntington. We make a swing through the MAC with Ohio, Kent and Miami, then we host 2009 WNIT team George Washington."
"Sprinkle in the University of Cincinnati, WVU and postseason programs North Carolina A & T and Cleveland State, and you can see we have our work cut out for us," Chadwick continued. "Almost ½ of all of our games are against teams who played postseason basketball last year. We are pumped about the challenge."
The season gets underway on November 12th as the Thundering Herd will travel to Farmville, Va. for the Longwood Tournament. For the third consecutive season, Marshall will open up with Appalachian State. The Mountaineers are the defending Women's Basketball Invitational tournament champions. The following day, the Herd will face either Campbell or tournament host Longwood.
On November 17th, Marshall will take on USC Upstate in its home opener in a contest that will be sponsored by Comfort Inn. Upstate is coming off of a 23-11 season last year, its best record in 15 years. From there, the Herd will face off against two former Mid-American Conference foes as Ohio University will travel to Huntington on November 23rd before MU travels to Kent State five days later.
December gets started with a visit by George Washington to the Henderson Center on the 2nd, followed by a trip to Oxford, Ohio for a tilt against another former MAC rival, Miami (Ohio). Marshall will wrap up December playing four of its final five games at home, beginning with a December 11th matchup against North Carolina A&T.
The Aggies had a successful run in the postseason WNIT in March, taking down in-state rivals Wake Forest and Charlotte on their way to a 23-11 mark. On the 18th, 2010 NCAA participant Cleveland State travels to Huntington. The Vikings advanced to the tournament by winning the Horizon League Tournament.
Following a short trip to Cincinnati on the 21st, Marshall will conclude the calendar year by hosting WBI participant Morehead State on the 28th and Elon on December 30. Non-conference play wraps up on January 19 as Marshall will face West Virginia in the annual Capital Classic in Charleston, W.Va.
Conference USA play gets underway on January 6 as MU travels to WBI finalist Memphis in its conference opener. Other highlights of the C-USA schedule include a home meeting against defending champion Tulane on January 16 and four games against 2010 WNIT participants in the month of February.
East Carolina, who went 23-11 a season ago, will travel to the Henderson Center on February 3 with Marshall returning the trip on the 27th. A road date at SMU on the 10th and a home game against Houston on the 24th will prove to be challenging contests for the Herd.
Marshall will wrap up the regular season at home on March 3, playing host to Southern Miss with the league tournament set for the following week. The 2011 Conference USA Tournament will take place in El Paso, Texas.
Game times will be announced at a later date when the television schedules are set.
