Marshall To Face West Virginia In Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - On Wednesday, the Marshall University men's basketball team will face No. 21 West Virginia in the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic in Charleston, W.Va.

Tip is set for 8 p.m. in the Charleston Civic Center.

Marshall, who enters play 12-5 and 1-2 in Conference USA, is coming off of a 77-61 loss at Memphis on Saturday. The Herd overcame an early 8-2 deficit to tie the game at 15-15, but a 20-0 run by the Tigers proved to be the difference as their lead would never go back into single digits.

DeAndre Kane led MU with 16 points. Tirrell Baines, who notched his 1,000th career point last Monday against Savannah State, scored 15 while hauling in a team-high nine rebounds.

Damier Pitts registered double figures for the seventh time in eight games, scoring 14. Pitts was also a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line. The junior has hit all 15 free throws in league play and has hit 24 of his last 25 overall.

The Mountaineers comes into the 2011 Capital Classic with a 12-4 mark and a 3-2 record in Big East play. WVU has won its last four games, including a win at No. 13 Georgetown and a home win on Sunday against eighth-ranked Purdue. Casey Mitchell leads West Virginia with 16.7 points per game. Kevin Jones averages 14.1 PPG and a team-high 6.9 rebounds.

The game will be televised on the Capital Classic Network and will also be available online at ESPN3.com. John Sanders and Frank Giardina will have the call.

On Saturday, Marshall will return home for a Conference USA tilt against East Carolina. The Herd and Pirates will tip at 7 p.m.
