NORFOLK, W.Va- Junior Dominika Zaprazna and sophomore Maria Voscekova were the only two members of the Thundering Herd women's tennis team still competing at the ITA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Sunday, and while both fell in their respective singles matches, the duo was able to team up for a round of sixteen doubles win.
The morning began with both ladies serving it up in 9:00 a.m., round of 32 matches against UVA opponents. Zaprazna faced the No. 5 seed Hana Tomljanovic, and Voscekova faced the No. 2 seeded Emily Fraser. Neither Herdswoman was given much of a chance, though, as their Cavalier opposition defeated them 6-2, 6-3, and 6-0, 6-1, respectively.
"I thought both UVA players came out and played exceptionally well," said Head Coach John Mercer. "Give them credit, they came out in the singles matches, played at a high level, and never really gave our girls a chance to adjust."
The Marshall pair overcame its singles defeats, though, rebounding with an 8-5 win over the UVA team of Peretz and O'Koniewski to advance to the quarterfinal stage. The team is now one of just eight doubles squads remaining in the tournament, and is three matches away from securing a place in the ITA National Indoor Tournament.
"I'm hoping the doubles team continues to find success," said Mercer. "I thought Dominika really took charge today, showing her experience and leading both Maria and herself to a win over some good opponents. Now they play a fellow, high-seeded team tomorrow and we're hoping they progress to the semifinals and beyond."
The Herd's No. 4 seeded tandem will now face the No. 5 ranked Bara sisters of Virginia Commonwealth tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Results may be seen by clicking here.
