NORFOLK, Va.- The Marshall University women's tennis team concluded the ITA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Monday, as the doubles team of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova fell in a gruesomely close quarterfinal matchup, 9-8.
The Bara sisters of Virginia Commonwealth University proved to be the duo's undoing, as they snapped a two-game winning streak for the No. 4 seeded Herd team with a closely-contested 9-8 victory in the quarterfinal stage. Zaprazna and Voscekova fell to the No. 5 seeded Bara sisters after defeating the University of Virginia's team of Peretz and O'Koniewski in the round of 16 just a day earlier, and both ladies concluded the tournament with a 1-1 record in singles matches and a 2-1 record in doubles.
"I thought our two girls played a really good doubles match there at the end," said Head Coach John Mercer. "It was a great game to watch with both teams playing so well, but we just weren't able to close them out on one or two crucial points."
Zaprazna and Voscekova were the most successful members of the team over the course of the tournament, as the two were the only Herd players to win both a singles and doubles match. Marshall's other four tennis players all suffered defeats in the opening matches of either their singles or doubles tournaments, and aside from Kara Kucin and Kristina Koprcina's first round doubles win, did not advance beyond the opening day.
The Herd will now take a two week break before resuming action at the UNC Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., on November 4.
