HUNTINGTON, W.VA. - The women's basketball team had 13 different players score in Thursday's 83-37 win over Salem International in the first of two exhibition games scheduled for the pre-season.
Marshall forced SIU to turn the ball over 49 times and had 11 different players record steals. The Herd totaled 23 steals in the game, while Alaya Mitchell led the team with five steals. Shay Weaver and Dorina Barett followed closely with three steals apiece.
Two Marshall players had plus-ten point counts, including Suporia Dickens with 13 points and Alyse Poindexter with 12 points. During the game, Marshall put up 71 different shots, compared to SIU's 37.
The Herd defense limited the Fighting Tigers to an overall 29.7 field goal percentage and only a 16.7 percentage from behind the arc. In the first half, Marshall only gave up 13 points and held SIU to a 16.7 field goal percentage.
The women's basketball team also used 24 points from the free-throw line to add to the final tally. At the end of the contest, Marshall went 24-for-35 from the free-throw line and recorded a 68.6 free-throw percentage.
Coach Chadwick's team grabbed 43 rebounds in the victory, 20 of which were offensive boards. Poindexter led the category with five total rebounds and as a team every single one of Chadwick's players had a rebound in the game.
A main component of the game was getting every player in the game to earn valuable court experience. Every player on Chadwick's roster recorded minutes during the contest and 13 different players added points to the game. Of the 11 newcomers on Chadwick's squad, five are transfers and tonight's game was their first chance to play together against another team.
Marshall returns to Cam Henderson Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for the final exhibition match against Bluefield State. The game will be offered through GameTracker, via HerdZone.com.
