MOREHEAD, KY. - The Marshall volleyball program closed out the Morehead State Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 (23-25, 30-32, 17-25) loss to tournament hosts, MSU. Marshall moves to a 0-2 record after the season-opening weekend.
Marshall was led by Laura Der, who had eight kills, seven digs and three block assists during the match. Der finished the weekend with a team-high 18 kills and 55 total attacks.
Sacha Byous-McConnell added offensively with six kills and a .500 attack percentage during the match. Freshman, Sammie Bane, made her second start at the setter spot and recorded 24 assists. Defensively, Dorothy Rahal recorded a team-high 12 digs.
Morehead State took advantage of their junior outside hitter, Ellie Roberson, who had 21 kills, to sweep the Herd.
Marshall climbed back from an eight point deficit in the first set to go 24-23, but MSU finished with a kill to end the set 25-23. The second set had nine back-to-back side-outs in extra points and ended with Morehead State grabbing the final two points for a 32-30 finish.
"We passed the ball poorly tonight and still hung in to compete," commented Coach Jacobs after the match. "We showed some good things, but we have to find a way to keep Sacha and Cameron involved in the offense. To be able to do that, we have to pass the ball better."
In the final set, Morehead State utilized a .407 attack percentage to knock off the Herd 25-17.
"We know that we lost to two very good opponents this weekend," noted Jacobs. "The dynamics of our team is feeling good and we have a lot to go off this weekend with."
Marshall will be back on the road next weekend to face off in the IUPUI tournament. The Herd will compete against Eastern Michigan, IUPUI, and Stetson throughout the weekend.
