Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University women's basketball team and Head Coach Royce Chadwick have announced the 2011-12 regular season schedule. The Herd will face 13 opponents who went beyond their conference tournament in postseason play throughout the duration of the 2010-11 season.
Coach Chadwick noted, "We are excited about the upcoming season. It proves to be very challenging as 13 competitions will be against teams who played in the NCAA, WNIT, or WBI tournament last season. Of those teams, 12 are 20-game winners. The schedule sprinkles in tough competition throughout the entire five months of play, facing Big East teams in West Virginia and Cincinnati as well as WBI tournament champion UAB twice."
Chadwick continued, "Some tough stretches for us will be four straight road games in December between the 15th and January 8th. Also, due to the rearrangement of our conference schedule to accompany the WVU game, we will finish the regular season with four of six on the road. On the other hand, however, we are truly excited to play in front of our home fans as we host 15 games, including two exhibition games, at the Cam Henderson center this season."
The season begins November 11, as Marshall plays host to former MAC foe, Kent State University, who represented its conference in the NIT in 2011. The Herd then welcome Miami (Ohio) to the Cam Henderson five days later on November 16 before traveling to Athens, Ohio on November 19 to take on the their first road opponent, the Ohio Bobcats. The last week of November will take The Herd to 2010-11 20-game-winner, Morehead State University, followed by a rendezvous with Nebraska-Omaha at the Henderson Center.
December opens with the Evansville Tournament in Evansville, Indiana, where MU will take on WBI semi-finalist, Chicago State University and then either Evansville University or Eastern Kentucky University throughout the two-day tournament. Marshall then welcomes the Big East's Cincinnati Bearcats and the Longwood University Lancers to the Cam. The remainder of December will then take The Herd on the road to face Furman, WNIT participant Tennessee Tech, and Ball State.
January opens Conference USA play as Marshall continues on the road, traveling to Texas to compete against 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Houston Cougars, and then back to Huntington to face 2010-11 20-game-winner Tulane Green Wave. Southern Miss and Southern Methodist University come to town the following week, before The Herd travels to take on in-state Big East rival West Virginia January 17. In 2010-11, the Mountaineers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
January continues to challenge MU, when The Herd take on 2010-11 C-USA champions UCF Knights at the Cam followed by a road trip to 20-game winner Memphis and Tulane for the second time.
Marshall opens February at home with a weekend affair against WNIT participant Rice and WBI Tournament champion UAB. The Herd then travel to face UTEP and East Carolina, before returning home to face Memphis again. February closes out with two on the road against UAB and Southern Miss for the second time, and a home match against East Carolina.
The Herd will complete the regular season with a March 1 battle at the University of Central Florida.
Game times will be announced at a later date when the television schedules are available. For more information and the full 2011-12 schedule click here.
