Wildcats Defeat No. 54 Herd, 5-2
Tennis Suffers First Loss of 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky.- The Thundering Herd tennis team's two match winning streak over the University of Kentucky came to an end on Friday afternoon as Marshall suffered a 5-2 loss to the Wildcats at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington.
The Herd entered the match with a 1-0 record and No. 54 national ranking following an impressive 5-2 win of its own over Eastern Michigan just one week prior, but Kentucky managed to turn the tables on its West Virginian visitors and snatched victory in what was the Wildcat's first match of the season.
Not even Marshall's No. 35 ranked doubles team of Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova could pick up a point on the day, as the duo fell to the No. 34 ranked Kentucky pair of Jessica Stiles and Khristina Blajkevitch, 9-8 (8) following an intense tiebreaker.
The only two members of the Herd to pick up wins in the match were freshman Ellie Ball - in the number three spot - and senior Kristina Koprcina - from the number six court. Ball is now 2-0 this season in singles matches.
With the loss Marshall falls to 1-1 for the season while Kentucky jumps to a 1-0 record with its first victory over the Herd since 2009. The ladies of the Thundering Herd tennis team will now wait to resume action until they travel to the University of North Carolina for the National Indoor Tournament this weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C. Marshall will battle UNC in the first match at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, and then face either Brown or VCU the following morning at 9:30 a.m.
