Marshall Drops Contest to Memphis, 71-58

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Marshall women's basketball left the locker rooms after halftime with a 37-32 lead, but the Herd allowed Memphis 39 points in the second half to fall 71-58 on Thursday evening at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Marshall dropped to 12-7 (3-3 C-USA) with the defeat, while Memphis improved to 15-4 (5-1 C-USA) and stayed undefeated at home with an 11-0 record.
Lateidra Elliott finished with a team-high 13 points, while Shay Weaver followed with 11. Weaver recorded her second start of the year and led the Herd with seven rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.
Ball protection proved to be a catalyst in the loss as the Herd turned the ball over 27 times. Memphis finished the game with 20 steals, compared to Marshall's eight. The count is the largest amount of steals Marshall has allowed all season.
As the top offense in Conference USA, Memphis proved their worth after scoring the most points Marshall's defense has given up all season (71). The Tigers were led by Jasmine Lee who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
The Herd went into halftime with a 37-32 after finishing the opening period with a 71.4 percent average from behind the arc, making 5-for-7. Elliott and Weaver both had two three-pointers each in the half.
Memphis went on a 17-4 run to take over the lead for the first time in the second half. The Tigers sustained a lead for the remainder of the half to secure the 71-58 win.
Memphis finished the game with more rebounds and free throws, marking the first time Marshall has been the lesser in both categories all season.
After not having a single free throw in the first half, Marshall finished the game 6-for-10 from the line while the Tigers had 19 points from the free throw line.
The Herd shot over 40 percent from the field after making 23-for-56 and totaled six three-pointers during the contest.
Marshall continues to Tulane for their next game on the road. The contest will take place on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET and will be televised on FSN.
