CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Sunday morning's consolation match between the Marshall and VCU tennis teams proved to be anything but consoling for the Thundering Herd, as the team fell 5-1 to the No. 34 ranked Rams on the final day of ITA Kickoff Weekend action.

Following a day one loss to host-team UNC, the 1-2 Herd faced-off against a 4-1 VCU team that had lost 4-1 to Brown in the opening round of the indoor tournament. On Sunday, it was the Rams, though, who recorded a 5-1 victory over the Thundering Herd with wins in four of the five singles matches and two of the three doubles contests. The singles match being played between Marshall's Kristina Koprcina and VCU's Olga Terteac in the number five slot was not finished following a split of the opening two sets.

Marshall, who falls to 1-3 on the young season, did find some positives on the day, though, as Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova - the Herd's only victors from the previous day's doubles matches against UNC - once again showed why they are the nation's No. 35 ranked tandem with an 8-4 win over VCU's Alex and Ana Bara.

Zaprazna also showed her mettle by claiming the squad's only singles victory of the weekend in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of VCU No. 1 Josefin Hjertquist.

"I thought we made some good progress today," said Head Coach John Mercer. "We still have a long way to go, but the team is heading in the right direction. We're all looking forward to playing in front of our terrific supporters at the home opener against Morehead State this Saturday."

Indeed, the Herd will now return to Huntington in preparation for its home-opener against the Eagles of Morehead State this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
