HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall looks to remain unbeaten at the Cam Henderson Center as it plays host to Savannah State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Thundering Herd (6-5) is coming off a 72-56 loss to No. 11 Cincinnati on Saturday, but returns to a place where it has won six consecutive games and holds a 5-0 record this season in the Cam Henderson Center. It will be the 450th game in the building, now in its 32nd season.
Marshall is led by junior guard D.D. Scarver who has scored 20 points in each of his last two games. The first-year player is averaging a team-high 15.3 points per game and has been a deadly three-point shooter going a combined 13-of-24 over the last three games and boasts an accuracy of 42.5 percent on the season.
Scarver, along with fellow junior college transfer Elijah Pittman have made at least one three-pointer in every game this season. Pittman is averaging 14.7 points per game and is shooting 55.6 percent from the field.
Big men Nigel Spikes (8.9 rpg) and Dennis Tinnon (9.5 rpg) have paced the Herd rebounding effort, which ranks 22nd in the country at 41.4 per game. Marshall is the only team with two top five Conference USA rebounders as Tinnon is fourth and Spikes is fifth.
Savannah State (5-6) is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, located in Savannah, Ga. It will be the Tigers' third of five consecutive road games as they are coming off losses to Ohio State (85-45) and Marquette (71-51).
Savannah State is led by senior forward Rashad Hassan's team-high 12.9 points per game. The MEAC Preseason Player of the Year went over 1,000 career points earlier this season.
Marshall leads the all-time series 2-0, both meetings coming in head coach Tom Herrion's first season with the Herd. Marshall won 56-47 in Savannah and then 71-57 in Huntington nearly a month later.
