UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Thundering Herd tennis team lost its second consecutive match - and fourth straight to nationally ranked opposition - on Friday afternoon, surrendering a 5-2 decision to the No. 61 ranked Nittany Lions of Penn State University.
Entering the match the No. 65 ranked Marshall squad held a 7-3 all-time series advantage over Penn State and defeated the Nittany Lions 4-3 in Huntington last season. This year, though, the Herd let the host side come back from a doubles loss to win five of six singles matches and claim the overall victory.
Marshall, now sitting at 3-5 for the season, gained an early advantage over Penn State with a 9-7 win by the Herd's No. 51 ranked doubles tandem of Maria Voscekova and Dominika Zaprazna over Penn State's Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting following a prior 8-4 win by Kara Kucin and Ellie Ball against Carmen Sandor and Fernanda Perrotta.
The Nittany Lions responded, though, winning five of six singles matches to improve to 6-3 for the season. Voscekova was the only member of the Herd to win her singles match, claiming a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Utting.
Marshall will now face a quick turnaround as the team must regroup and refocus for its match against Miami University (Ohio) at noon on Saturday.
