GREENEVILLE, N.C.- The Marshall University women's tennis team improved to 9-6 on the season and 1-0 in Conference USA play with a convincing 6-1 victory over the East Carolina University Pirates on Wednesday morning.
The Herd is now unbeaten in its last six matches and is 3-0 all-time against ECU following Wednesday's road win. Marshall swept the Pirates 3-0 in doubles for the lone doubles point before winning five of six singles matches to claim the overall victory six games to one.
In doubles, Marshall's number one duo Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova reached win number 11 for the season with an 8-5 victory over ECU's Terpko and Zhang, while the Herd's Ellie Ball and Kara Kucin similarly dispatched of their Pirate opposition with a convincing 8-2 win. The number three doubles tandem of Karli Timko and Kristina Koprcina found themselves in a dogfight on court three, but fought hard to dig-out an 8-7 victory with a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker.
Koprcina found herself in another battle during her singles showdown on court five, but couldn't manage to pull-out the victory after falling behind with a 7-4, tiebreaker loss in the opening set. The senior's hard-fought singles loss was the Herd's only blemish in an otherwise perfect performance, though, as Zaprazna, Voscekova, Ball, Kucin, and Timko won their singles matches to send the Herd home from its spring break trip riding a six match win streak. Sophomore Karli Timko, who won 6-1, 6-0 in her match, was the only member of the Herd to go undefeated in all of her matches over the past week.
"I thought we did a pretty good job working hard and trying to put a good day together," said head coach John Mercer. "We're getting better at cleaning up our mistakes and are playing pretty well at this point. Hopefully we can keep progressing as the season moves forward and perform even better in our next match."
The Herd will now return to Huntington as it prepares for a home match against Eastern Kentucky University at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center on Sunday, March 25, at 1:00 p.m.
