LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Marshall University women's tennis team came out on the wrong side of a closely contested match on Friday afternoon, falling 3-4 to the University of Louisville Cardinals at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center.
Marshall went down early after losing the doubles point to Louisville with losses on courts one and three. The Herd entered the matches with readjusted doubles pairings, as Dominika Zaprazna switched places with Ellie Ball to partner Kara Kucin on court two. Zaprazna and Kucin won 8-4 over the Cardinals' Fellerhoff and Miller, but both Voscekova and Ball, and Karli Timko and Kristina Koprcina fell 8-2 in their respective matches.
Down 1-0 heading into singles play, Marshall fell even further behind when Ball lost 2-6, 3-6 to Rebecca Shine. Kucin and Koprcina then won with resounding, straight-set victories to draw things level at 2-2 before Louisville pulled back in front via Amelia Harris's 7-6, 6-2 win over Herd freshman Kai Broomfield.
Down 3-2, Marshall's hopes hinged on the outcome of the Voscekova and Timko matches on courts one and five, respectively. Timko jumped out to an early lead over Sarah Miller with a 6-3 victory in the first set, but fell 6-7 in the second. Miller then took advantage of the momentum swing and downed the Marshall sophomore 6-1 in the third set to clinch the overall match for the Cardinals.
Voscekova - playing at the No. 1 spot in place of the ailing Zaprazna - won her match 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 for good measure, but it was little consolation for the Herd as it fell to 11-8 for the season. Marshall is now 3-6 on the road this spring and will return to the Bass Rudd Tennis Center to face Conference USA opponent Tulsa in a neutral-site battle at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
