HAVE YOU HERD?
The Thundering Herd made its first road trip of the 2013-14 season and fell at Robert Morris, 67-48, Tuesday, Nov. 12. Junior AJ Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) was the only Marshall player to score in double figures, posting a season-high 12 points. She was 5-of-7 from the floor and paced the team with two three-pointers.
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Monday's game marks the start of a six-game home stand for the Herd, the longest stretch since the 1985-86 season, when Marshall stayed home for seven consecutive games. The seven-game home stretches in both the 1985-86 and 1983-84 seasons are the longest home runs in team history.
From Nov. 18 through Dec. 29, the Herd will play a total of nine home games, with one neutral site matchup versus West Virginia at the Charleston Civic Center (Dec. 14). Marshall will not travel again until the New Year, when it makes a trip to NJIT, Jan. 5.
ADVANTAGE AT THE CAM
Since Cam Henderson Center opened in 1981, the Herd holds a home record of 252-171 (.596 winning percentage). Last season, the Herd was 3-2 at home versus non-conference opponents.
CHARITY WORK
The new officiating guidelines designed to create more offensive flow have resulted in 36 fouls and 49 free throw attempts in the first two games of the Herd's 2013-14 season. Marshall converted 24 of those 49 attempts for a .490 percentage. The 2012-13 Herd averaged 13.5 fouls and 14.1 free throw attempts per game.
NEWCOMER CONTRIBUTIONS
Seven of the Herd's 10 new players have seen playing time and have combined for 62% of Marshall's total offense thus far. Newcomer Leah Scott (Detroit, Mich.) leads all scorers with 28 over two games, averaging 14.0 points.
Notably, Marshall's 2013-14 roster features the most newcomers (10) in Conference USA, including five freshmen, three junior college transfers and two NCAA Division I transfers.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Morehead State stands at 2-2 after winning its first two games and dropping its last two matchups. All four of the Eagles' games have been decided by eight points or less. Last time out, visiting Ohio outscored the Eagles 16-8 in overtime and handed MSU a 64-56 defeat Saturday at Johnson Arena. Almesha Jones scored a team-high 12 points, while freshman forward Aaliyah Wells registered career highs of nine points and five rebounds.
According to the Herd record book, Marshall leads the all-time series versus Morehead State, 26-20. The teams haven't met since Nov. 23, 2011, when Marshall came away with an 83-66 win. Monday's game marks the 47th meeting between the teams, which is the second-longest series for the Herd behind West Virginia (52).
UP NEXT
Marshall has another six-day break before hosting Indiana State, Sunday, Nov. 24, at 2 p.m. at Cam Henderson Center.
