QDOBA INVITATIONAL CENTRAL | Marshall Match Notes
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After starting the 2013 regular season with four road dates, the Marshall men's soccer team (0-3-1) will have its home opening weekend against Oakland (Mich.) and IPFW as part of the Qdoba Invitational, scheduled on Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
With IPFW (0-3-1), Oakland (0-2-2) and St. Francis (3-1-0) set to descend on Huntington for the weekend of games, the Thundering Herd will look to record its first win of the season in its brand new $8 million home. Marshall's two home contests that will be part of the Qdoba Invitational will kick-start what is set to be a six-game homestand that will conclude with a night game against Conference USA newcomer New Mexico (Sept. 30).
The Herd began the year with four road contests and returned home with just one point to show for the trip. Two games went into overtime, one of which ended in a draw, while the other two resulted in regulation defeats for Marshall.
SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
Oakland has posted a 0-2-2 record, and the Grizzlies come to Huntington in search of their first win of 2013. Coming off a Summit League regular-season title in 2012, the Grizzlies enter the Horizon League looking to make a mark by fielding three 2012 All-Summit League first-team selections, two second-team picks and the 2012 Summit League Defensive Player of the Year in John Timm. Oakland was ranked in a tie for second place in the Horizon League Preseason Coaches' Poll.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
Entering the weekend, IPFW has posted an 0-3-1 record. In the 2013 Summit League Preseason Poll, the Mastodons were picked fifth among seven teams after posting a 4-13-0 record in 2012. The lone point that IPFW has picked up thus far came in a double-overtime draw with Northern Kentucky (Aug. 30).
SERIES HISTORY
Marshall will face Oakland for the third time. The Herd is 2-0-0 in those matches. The last meeting was in 2011 in Huntington - a 3-1 Marshall victory.
The Mastodons will make their first trip to Marshall. The Herd traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind., during the 2012 season while the construction of Veterans Memorial Complex was taking place. The Herd won 1-0 last season on a goal in the 41st minute from then-senior Eddie Prugh.
